چکیده
The magnetic resonance imaging studies investigating the volumes of the orbitofrontal cortex in patients suffering from schizophrenia are here presented, trying to elucidate its role for the pathophysiology and for the cognition of the disease.

Regional frontal abnormalities in schizophrenia: a quantitative gray matter volume and cortical surface size study.
BACKGROUND Previous structural studies of the frontal lobe in schizophrenia have had somewhat inconsistent results, but most of them have measured the frontal lobe as a single brain structure. To investigate more specific abnormalities in frontal subregions, we measured gray matter volume and cortical surface size in 10 subregions in drug-naive patients during the early stages of the illness. ...
متن کاملConvergent Evidence from Multimodal Imaging Reveals Amygdala Abnormalities in Schizophrenic Patients and Their First-Degree Relatives
BACKGROUND Shared neuropathological features between schizophrenic patients and their first-degree relatives have potential as indicators of genetic vulnerability to schizophrenia. We sought to explore genetic influences on brain morphology and function in schizophrenic patients and their relatives. METHODS Using a multimodal imaging strategy, we studied 33 schizophrenic patients, 55 of their...
متن کاملThe involvement of the orbitofrontal cortex in psychiatric disorders: an update of neuroimaging findings.
OBJECTIVE To report structural and functional neuroimaging studies exploring the potential role of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in the pathophysiology of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders (PD). METHOD A non-systematic literature review was conducted by means of MEDLINE using the following terms as parameters: "orbitofrontal cortex", "schizophrenia", "bipolar disorder", "major depress...
متن کاملGlucocorticoid receptor mRNA and protein isoform alterations in the orbitofrontal cortex in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
BACKGROUND The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) may play a role in the pathogenesis of psychiatric illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, in which hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis abnormalities are observed and stress has been implicated. A critical component of the HPA axis which mediates cellular stress responses in the OFC, and has been implicated in psychiatric illness, is...
متن کاملOrbitofrontal dopamine depletion upregulates caudate dopamine and alters behavior via changes in reinforcement sensitivity.
Schizophrenia is associated with upregulation of dopamine (DA) release in the caudate nucleus. The caudate has dense connections with the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) via the frontostriatal loops, and both areas exhibit pathophysiological change in schizophrenia. Despite evidence that abnormalities in dopaminergic neurotransmission and prefrontal cortex function co-occur in schizophrenia, the inf...
